Compassionate and Supportive Patient Care

Information on Second Trimester & Later Surgical Abortion in Aurora, CO

The induction abortion process typically takes 2 days, depending on your medical history and individual needs.

Day 1: Evaluation and Cervical Preparation

  • An ultrasound will be performed to measure the pregnancy and assess gestational age.
  • Your medical history, physical exam, lab tests, and physician evaluation will determine whether the induction procedure is appropriate.
  • Cervical preparation begins with gentle dilation using small instruments.
  • Laminaria are placed to continue opening the cervix overnight.
  • An amniocentesis to induce a fetal demise will be performed after 20 weeks

Day 2: Induction and Completion

  • You will return to the office at 7-9 am
  • An indwelling IV will be placed to deliver pain medication as needed
  • Oral medication is used to further ripen the cervix.
  • When the mouth is open enough, moderate sedation is used to perform an assisted delivery a stillborn fetus.
  • Our goal is to minimize the pain both emotionally and physically

 

Second Trimester & Later Surgical Procedure

The procedure to remove the pregnancy is then performed after the above preparation. The procedure is completed in approximately 10 minutes. The physician numbs the cervix with local anesthesia (lidocaine) and IV sedation will be administered. The pregnancy is removed by vacuum aspiration, or suction. No tissue is cut nor is any incisions made. Menstrual-like cramping will occur during the procedure and menstrual like bleeding will follow the procedure. Following the procedure, patients rest comfortably under supervision for approximately 30-60 minutes.
