Medication Abortion

There are two medications used to terminate a pregnancy up to 10 weeks. Mifeprex (RU-486) is taken one time in the office. This medication stops the pregnancy from implanting in the uterine wall. It takes 24-48 hours to be effective. You will be given a second medication, misoprostol, to take home. After 24-48 hours you will take the second medication. Usually, there are no symptoms until the second medication is taken at home.

First Trimester Surgical Abortion

A first-trimester abortion by definition is a procedure performed up to 12 weeks. The procedure is usually completed within 5-10 minutes. The decision to undergo an abortion with a surgical procedure is personal choice. Patients who prefer the procedure frequently desire the termination be complete prior to leaving the office.

Second Trimester & Later Abortion

A second-trimester & later surgical abortion is performed 13 through 31+6 weeks pregnant. This procedure can be done in one day up until 17 weeks. Between 13-17 weeks, you will receive medication one hour prior to the procedure. This medication, misoprostol, will dilate the cervix (mouth to the uterus) to minimize the risks and pain of the procedure.
